The Wedding Quilt
Ah... some sizable progress made on my sister's/brother-in-law's
wedding quilt for their wedding on August 9th. Burgundy said to
either make it purple, Mike's favorite color, or natural colors,
since they were eventually going to decorate their house with
those colors. I opted for naturals, designing something with contrast.
Here's
the center of it, a basketweave pattern. I had the strips sewn
together but was reluctant to iron them flat in the summer heat.
Today has been nice and cool. Just perfect.
The
plan is to make the whole quilt about 100" square. The
next step is to make a concentric square of black and white
8 pointed stars. After that a border of fabric than another
concentric square of log cabin blocks. Assuming that bring it
about 100", I'll add a couple more borders and Ta Da!
I'm
hoping to have the quilt top done by the wedding, and then get
it machine quilted. The joy of quilting, for me, is the fabric
selection, design and piecing. Purists may scoff at my disinterest
in quilting, but so be it.

Seeing Stars
Not much to blog about. Return of client work is cutting into
makin-stuff-with-my-hands-time, but the finanical side of me if
breathing easier. Pretty much have been slowly making stars for
Burgundy and Mike's wedding quilt. Thankfully, I learned a shortcut
to making the "geese" to make eight pointed stars. My
first, uneducated stab at it was a mess. The stars are different
combinations of fabrics, with the black/sky parts all being one
fabric, the white/points being all one fabric, the middle square
a second white fabric. With variation from star to star. They're
about 7.5" square. 20 made, 8 to go... |

Sewing, Sleeping & Socializing
Those were the three components of this weekend. I'm determined
to have Burgundy and Mike's quilt top done by Saturday, to take
to Minnesota on Sunday.
Making good progress. Much sewing The quilt is all designed
on squares (concentric borders/rows of blocks) in a naturals
palette. The centerpiece is a basketweave pattern (see June),
then a border, then a row of stars (see below). A couple more
borders and then a border of these log cabin blocks. They'll
be trimmed down to 10" square. A border or two and then
a row of 3" squares. A couple more borders and there you
have a bed sized square quilt of squares.

Nearly there, with log cabins waiting on the left and the center
on the right.

The
Big Ta Da!!
Heres' the finished quilt top for Burgundy and Mike's wedding.
I can only tease them with the quilt top. I'll take it back
home with me and get it machine quilted by someone in the know.
I hope to get the finished quilt to them before it gets cold.
Very happy with the results. I'll compile a project page with
more photos when I return. At certain point in the process,
I thought, "I can't believe I'm cutting up big pieces of
fabric into little pieces of fabric only to sew them into big
pieces of fabric again. I think I emptied about 6 spools of
thread! I didn't measure it one last time before I rolled it
up for the luggage, but it's roughly 110" square. Burgundy
saw the pic below, and said, "You must be sewing your butt
off." No, it's still there, but a little sore from the
chair. She really liked what she saw, but I can't wait to wow
her with the real thing!

Quilty Goodness!
I was in Minnesota this weekend for work and pleasure. But one
of the biggest pleasures was to see my sister's finished quilt!
I sent it off to Tammy Andersen of Railroad
Treasures Quilt Shop in Hanska, Minnesota to be machine
quilted and bound.
Yes,
I confess, my name is Brandy and I'm a "topper." In
the world of quilts, that means I like designing and sewing
the quilt top, not the quilting and binding. So, with the mammoth
110" square quilt top for Burgundy and Mike's wedding,
it was just a matter of who to hire for the second half of the
quilt work.
I
picked Tammy because her site had clear information, her prices
were competitive and she's in Minnesota - where my sis lives
and I hail from.
I
sent her 50% down, the quilt top, the backing fabric (the top
was just bigger than the widest backing I could find, so it
was pieced together), a yard of fabric for the binding and thread
to match it.
I
asked Tammy to send the quilt straight to Burgundy, so I didn't
get to see it. I finally did it is GORGEOUS!

| I
told Tammy I'd like a meandering pattern, but the scale and thread
color was up to her - both great choices. I know it's tough to
see in this pic, especially if you're not using to looking at
quilting, but the snaky line are the quilting, done with beige
thread. The quilt is a great weight too! Just thick enough to
be "quilty" but not too thick of puffy.
I
love it! And I know Burgundy
and Mike will get a lot of warmth and use out of it.
I've
been using the polar fleece "cheat" of backing and
quilting my quilts with a layer of that - So, I don't know when
I'll be able to use Tammy's
services next, but I can highly recommend her!
