Lanterns Quilts
work in progress • several tops • cotton tops, will be backed with fleece

In an interest to get more floating projects DONE, I pulled out my two bins labelled "Asian Quilt Blocks." Several years ago, I bought ninve super prints between eQuilter.com and BornToQuilt.com. I began a design that included a border of lanterns. So, I started piecing together 100 lanterns in 10 color combination. I got about halfway through them when the whole thing got tucked into the bins and pushed to the back of my brain.

First step, finished the lanterns:

Next I sewed strips of white fabric to the sides of the blocks above to make them a square 5.5" block.

Then I cut all the other fabric. The quilt is made of these blocks:
1a. The lanterns - 5.5" By the way I only used 50 of the 100 lanterns for these
1b. Four patches made with two solids (leftover from the lanterns) and two prints - 5.5"
1c. The medium sized prints cut to 5.5" square
Those three blocks were sewn into 10" squares of one 1a, one 1b and two 1c's. (Got it? Makes more sense looking at the final top)

2. Three large scale prints cut to 10" square

So... here's the 3" squares pinned together to become the 1b's:

The 1c's:
The 2's:
Here's the pile of 1b's chain stitched in pairs, waiting to be made into four-patches:
Halfway between Christmas and New Years I sewed the 1a's, 1b's and 1c's together:

After completing these, I arranged these with all of the 2's. Turns out I had enough for two lap quilt sized tops! Enough leftover blocks to make a couple more tops, with the help of more yardage of the large scale prints (can't find those anymore, so I'll have to find new ones).

After having a carpet of laid out quilt tops, I finally sewed the two tops I had laid out. They need a bit of border, but they're nearly done.

More to come...
