A
Bra for Breast Cancer
The 36D Snow Queen
I heard
that a mail art call went out for embellished bras for an
art exhibit about breast cancer at the Texas Artist Museum.
Press
release here. The show and the collection of submitted
bras will travel on exhibit the next couple years, then the
undergarments will be auctioned off to raise money for breast
cancer research.
I figured
I better make a bra and make it a doozy!
I grew
boobies at age 11. Big 'uns. I decided that I'd embellish
just the kind of blue collar department store boxed bra that
I dreaded while bra shopping. The kind that made boobs pointy
and so unattractive. The kind that could clothe small children.
I trekked
to Sears and found this number for $11.42. Woo hoo! White
cotton, no stretch, very matronly. I wanted to get my size,
but mine is the holy grail of undergarments, so this is a
36D. Therefore this will be the "36D of the Snow Queen."
Lotsa silver and white beads and sequins and big ol' snowflakes
over the nipples.

The
bra with snowflakes halfway done.

I started
out making a snowflake asterisk base with silver wired ribbon.
I sewed that down with insanely tiny stitches - now I know
why I don't hand-sew. Then I embroidered "The 36D Snow
Queen" in medium gray floss. Next, I chain stitched loops
in the crooks of the snowflake points and added tiny sequins.
The next round was adding 6 sequin branches off of each arm.
After the big snowflakes were topped off with the beads and
sequins at the apex/nipple, I sewed big silver snowflakes
all around. I picked these up at the Container Store years
ago, where they were sold as gift wrapping doo-das. Unlike
most snowflake sequins, these were thicker with rounded edges.
No snagging points. Perfect. I think they really make the
bra. I added some fake pearls and white seed beads as a border
and added a centerpieces of some more sequins. Sequin party!
And viola
- the finished piece!
