Month O' Softies: The Wild West
Deep within my heart lies a melody,
A song of old San Antone,
Where in dreams I live with a memory,
Beneath the stars all alone.

Loobylu offered The Wild West as August's theme. Here's the menagerie.

Nearly every month, I immediately know what I'm going to do. This month, I was slower to an idea. I know a little something about Western Wear from a stint as an accordion player in a square dance band. And I know to make a stellar western ensemble for a doll would take a lot of time and details. Perhaps that what was slowly me down. The solution? Draw the details, not sew them. It is so much fun to draw and I'm so glad I can.

Therefore, I got out a nice pieces of fabric and black fabric paint and drew San Antonio Rose. After the outlining paint dried, I covered in a few areas with red, green and black paint. Then I simply sewed her into a pillow doll. Her backing fabric is red with tiny white swiss dots. Introducing Miss Rose:

New Drawings: Populo
Completely wowed by Ana Ventura and Mariana Massarani I had to get drawing yesterday. A bit of their bricolage, energy and spontaneity and the simple iconic folks I draw in my graphic facilitation work.

Here's the first out of what I hope are many:

And she's available on all sorts of good CafePress stuff in my store. Happy swimming and happy drawing!

Illinois State Fair 2005
Can't beat a state fair for photo fodder. My last state fair adventure was in 2001 in Minnesota. Minnesota's art deco buildings, butter sculptures, seed art and guys in gopher suits must make Minnesota's fair one the top five in the country. Illinois wasn't as shiny or exciting, but it did make for a good day's entertainment:

Seventy more photos reside over here. I hope you enjoy them. And if you still have time, make it to your state fair and eat yourself silly.

Evidence of Art
My left hand, this morning:

I knew about the orange paint, because I bumped wet paint. Durn it. I didn't know about the blue vampire bite of two dots on the underside of my arm!

Here's what I'm working on:

Wooden peg dolls, about 60% done. Which reminds me, I have some tiny, unpainted peg dolls too...

Two Pottery Paintin' Ladies
Last Tuesday, Justyna and I met up to paint pottery. She picked a divided rectangular plate to paint. After much deliberating, I copied her. Same piece, very different decoration. Tonight, a week later, we met up to pick up our plates and eat good food at Wishbone.

Justyna painted hers with cherry blossoms on a sky blue background.

I made a you-are-what-you-eat plate, thinking I can use it for breakfast and snacking. Unfortunately, my morning staple of oatmeal isn't going to fit so well in the shallow dish.

I like the spacemanesque green nimbus around my head, but my favorite, favorite part is the dots on my blue sweater.
