Pillow Doll Update
Happily, nearly half of the pillow dolls found new homes this weekend. I made a bunch of $10 sized dolls, thinking that that price point would sell well. Only sold one! Huh. And less surprisingly, the cats were a big hit. My favorite was a woman who bought these two -

- excited that they represented her two cats, and even the relative sizes!

I've updated the page with what's sold and what's for sale with prices. No time at the moment to add Paypal buttons. If you're keen on owning one, email me a paypal payment for the price. I'll foot the shipping for US orders.

p.s. The Renegade Craft Fair was a big, rainy, muddy mess! Glad to be back home and cozy.

Pillow Doll Factory
Holy Moley! I need a labor rights activist to bring myself to my attention. I am working TOO HARD. In preparation to this weekend's Renegade Craft Fair and for September's Month of Softies submission, I made a small army of pillow dolls. They were inspired by August's San Antonio Rose.

Here's a few to represent the group:

Take a look at the whole army
on this page. (I had to snap photos before sunset to get better results, so some of these guys still need their stuffing holes sewn shut.)

Busy Beaver Saves the Day!
Busy Beaver Button Company Are heroes. Tuesday, I sat down to design new, last-minute buttons for this weekend's Renegade Craft Fair. Happily paid for the rush order with a delivery Friday morning. Got 'em Thursday afternoon and la-la-love them.

Loosetooth.com Button: 2005
Because I was working towards getting to Minnesota last weekend, I plum forgot that I had to get buttons made for this upcoming weekend's Renegade Craft Fair. Gah! But I visited Busy Beaver Button Company's site. Turns out I can get a rush order done. So, I sat here at my computer until I came up with a design. I started out with NO idea. But ended up with my favorite button yet!

KAPOW!
The bulk of the squares for my Quilters Comfort America quilts are cut. Oof.

Theses 6" squares are two stacks 18" high - THIRTY-SIX inches of quilt squares!

Nuther Break
*whew* Just watched Charlie's Angels while cutting more squares. The only squares left to make are the ones out of the fabric I bought Thursday. Definite homestretch. Boy, I'm wandering in the Land of Past Sewing Projects and Miscellany:
• Extra navy blue flannel from Jim's quilt.
• Super cute polar bear flannel that were meant to become pjs, but never did.
• A cute shirt that didn't fit right.
• Beautiful batik fabric for a quilt I was going to make my friend Becca, who unfortunately died right after her 24th birthday, in early September.
• My beloved but worn out shiny pink jeans.
• Pieces of my sister's wedding quilt.
• Scrap hand-me-downs from Larisa, Amihan, Kathleen, Pat...
All sorts of good stuff. Though I am pooped out at the moment, it feels good that all these pieces are going to good use!

Now some edamame and rest before the last push.

Oh, and Amy Beth added to my drawing! Check it out.

Break
I'm nearly done cutting all those darn squares for Quilters Comfort America - I'm kind of losing my mind with it. Feels overwhelming at the moment. The idea is that once I get these cut, I'll be able to sit down and sort through put together fabric combination. My favorite part of quilting is choosing and coordinating fabrics and designing. So, that'll be fun. Then, then, comes all the sewing. I'm going to just sew one at a time and see how it goes.

But I'm taking a snack break and I drew this. I'm also listening to archives This American Life shows.

Make sure you listen to the After the Flood show that was on this weekend - stories from New Orleans that are from real people (not network news nonsense). Heartening and Disheartening simultaneously.

Quilters Comfort America
I've been quiet over here because first I've been questioning myself on how to help Hurricane Katrina Evacuees in a meaningful way. Sure, I donated money. Money is always helpful, but it didn't feel meaningful to me. I was at a loss for awhile. I wanted to donate school and art supplies, because I feel that journaling/drawing/sketching and self-expression are a human need. But while I believe that, it felt like I wasn't helping with the most basic human needs. Plus, I was worried that without someone specifically seeing that those items got to the right people, that my art stuff could be lost in all the contributions. It's amazing how people want to send stuff, but I'm afraid that that's creating a problem of sorting, organizing and distributing all of that stuff.*

Then I found Quilters Comfort America. Bedding is a most basic need and these folks were making sure that the quilt made it to those who need them. This has meaning to me. I have the design and sewing skills to help. I know just how comforting a quilt can be. The homemade object carries an energy of it's maker to the recipient. Plus there's an element of beauty to it, above and beyond a basic blanket.

So, I started realizing how much materials I already had here. And yesterday, I bought one big bag of new fabric, and one bag of used bedding and clothing to turn into quilts.

The design parameters are simple. Six inch squares. I love squares. Six inches seemed small enough to use a bunch of scraps, but large enough to make quilts relatively quickly. And while it's not a intricate design, I'm using my design skills to combine those squares in a beautiful way.

I'm energized and overwhelmed by this at the same time. I'll post pics once I feel like I've got my first round of squares cut, and I can see how many quilts I can make. Stay tuned.

*Here's a smart piece of advice I found. If you're donating goods, you can help greatly by boxing and clearly labeling your donations. There's massive amounts of goodwill and energy going towards people give things - just think about how you can help those mountains be organized. Ex. label a box "Women's Size 16 clothes" and if you can seperate your items into seperate boxes. Be specific. It can only help those who are sorting out all that goodwill and energy!
