Thanks
to everyone who's emailed well wishes for Numo and I. I'm behind
on email, so while unresponsive, I am grateful. I'm off to Memphis
and New Orleans for a few days. Sandra
is pet sitting, and I'm having my first trip as a new and slightly
nervous pet owner!

Here goes! I built a new
blog for all things Numo. A few more pics for those wanting
them. Oh, and, canned crickets are stinky.

Condiments!

a bargraph of the condiments we got in our bags:

Left to Right: ketchup, mayo, mustard, butter, jelly, salt and pepper

Billy just called and asked, "You're not
getting all hedgehog on me, are you?" He was teasing, but I've
been wondering that myself. I'm working on a seperate Numo blog,
so all my pet posts can be contained. Right now, the news is
Numo.

Hee!
I was doing my neighborhood errands just now. I walked by a woman
and three girls. One of the girls exclaimed expertly -
"Four girls plus zero boys equals fun."
I hear ya, sister.

On
My Person
Work was severly lacking December, January, February. Today was
the first day in months I have just did errands. On the
list was lots of pet supply procurement. My the time I plopped down
back home, I had:
• 200 black cable ties (to put together Numo's cage)
• 1 4" diameter PVC elbow joint (hiding place for Numo)
• 1 container hedgehog food (Numo food)
• 2 packages cat food (Numo food)
• 1 can freeze dried mealie worms (Numo treats)
• 1 can freeze dried crickets (Numo treats)
• 1 Cyber-shot® DSC-P200 Digital Camera (Brandy treat & replacing
an well-worn DSC-P5. And marked down!)
• 1 plush Peep "backpack clip" (toy for Numo)
• 1 box black hair dye (Brandy maintenance)
• 2 small cat litter pans (probably too tall for Numo)
• 1 electric heating pad (pet hedgehogs don't like to be cold)
• 1 electronic timer (")
• 1 $2 room thermometer (")
• 2 boxes wire grid storage unit kits (Numo's cage)
• 2 lil' tennis ball toys (toy for Numo)
• 10 washcloths (on sale, always useful)
• 1 roll ribbed shelf liner (in case I need to line something for
Numo so he can get a grip)
+ a business card for a Northside vet that cares for hedgehogs
Productive day, though I gotta say I'll be ordering several pet
items online to get what I want and need.
Now I'll get coffee and then I get to start building Numo's new
home! I'm using the C&C (Cubes
& Coroplast) Method for his cage. Brilliant idea, if
you ask me.

Huffy VonHuff Huff
Last night Numo got super huffy with me when I tried to take him
out for some Brandy/Numo time. I let him be since he had a long
day at the expo. Tonight he huffed and puffed, but I still got
him out. Hung out on my lap for 2.5 hours! Much huffing, some
exploring, much sleeping. But I did get to see more of his lovely
lil face.
And it's really neat learning to read Numo's quill and the levels
of on guard to relaxed. Granted, I'm seeing more of the former
than the latter.
I think every hedgehog should be named Mr/Ms Noselicker. Their
only really strong sense is smell. And when Numo was sniffing
he was constantly licking his schnoz. Like he's thinking over
and over, "Let me get this smell straight. Let me lick my nose
to make sure my sniffer is ready. Okay, wait..."
Tomorrow I get the rest of the stuff to build
his cage, and hit da pet store. Such a new adventure.

Meet
Numo!
I've never mentioned this on this site, because it was all Top Secret
-
I love pets. I wanted a pet. Considering everything, the pet for
me was a hedgehog. Yes, a hedgehog. Yes, they do have pet
hedgehogs. Then I debated for a full year about whether to get one.
Then some Kismet hit me in the face Friday morning. More Kismet
later, I met my hedgehog yesterday at the PetChicago show at Arlington
Racetrack.
There's pages and pages of story behind this, but it's Monday and
I've got to get client work done. So, here's Numo:
He's an African pygmy hedgehog, snowflake in color. He's 3 months
old. Veronica Moyle of Hedge
Hog'N Around tells me he'll need some patience. I've
got patience. As you can see, after his first night, he's sleeping
for the day, and wants nothing to do with the camera.
Hedgehogs are diurnal, meaning they wake at dawn and dusk. At dawn
he was tooling around in his wheel. I'm not used to this yet, and
I groggily woke up and looked into his cage. He was looking back
at me. Darn cute face. I can vouche for it without photographic
proof yet.
Much more to come after I get my worky work done.
NOTE: I wanted and got a hedgehog, I do
not want hedgehog stuff. Really, I mean it. When you see
hedgehog stuff, think of me and Numo, but please do not
buy it.

A Japanese toilet deoderizer I bought to entertain myself. Still
ironing out a few wrinkles left over from February. Therefore, it
was an easy decision to buy a $6 piece of plastic and stinky blue
liquid, because I knew it would make me smile. And look, he's already
maknig eyes at my cold water knob.

Wisconsin
Adventure
Not an oxymoron. Just got back from Green Bay, Wisconsin, where
I went to go see a movie. A
beloved movie. Much more to say, but I'm supertired and
superbusy.

Someone should buy me this tooth

Small Object. It's chocked full of charm! (And I'm waiting
for client payments.)
I've been working on a good simple cartoon tooth that I haven't
seen
yet. Sarah nailed it. I gotta keep drawing little teefs...
p.s. I like this
dental kinda guy too.

Overlaps
I had a superb time in Madison over the weekend. It was sunny and
a open jacket temperature all weekend. Amihan's party was good closure
on a lousy February. I met lovely folks. And the weekend had loads
of overlaps.
Not really coincidence, overlap is when your life folds over on
itself. Like last week when I was downtown and saw several strangers
I recognized. I didn't know what to call it last week, now "overlap"
sounds right. Like I said before, it lets me know that I'm going
the right direction when little things cross my path again.
In Madison, a friend of my friends was explaining that she was making
hats for all the babies coming into her life. She said it was a
Chicagoan's
pattern, turns out to be my lovely friend Cinnamon's!
I went to The
Glitter Workshop and there I saw my new friend Richelle's
fantastic cards. A man who lives in my building ended up on my bus
Northbound. The first Madison stop on the bus route, is a Park-N-Ride.
Happened to be across the street from the Broadway
Motel. This was the place Jim,
Pat
and I stayed at my first pass through Madison. It's not a true overlap,
but Madison's
capitol building felt like a cousin to my beloved Chicago
Cultural Center. The former wears brown and gold,
the latter wears white and watery greens.
The craziest overlap was meeting Jean Merrill. I overheard her mention
Minnesota at a party and I later asked if she was from MN. Yes.
Where? "Oh a little Nothern suburb." Where? "St. Anthony."
"I'm from Fridley." Another anonymous Northern suburb of the Twin
Cities. Yeah, I know Fridley is important to those who live there.
I mention it out of state and I might as well say "Mars." "Fridley?
What's FRIDLEY??"
Jean (which is my middle name) went to school 5
miles from me, and played in the summer marching band
that our two schools shared. She played the same instrument, French
Horn, that I played from 5th to 8th grade. Wasn't hardcore enough
to continue to high school. She played in my school's 1993? 1994?
production of Bye Bye Birdie, the year after my tenure as "Most
Valuable Senior" in theater had ended.
We compared names that were younger than me and in band and/or theater.
Our impressions of folks were very similar. And hey, Nathan Gustafson?
Jean and I both want to know how life is treating you these days.
I'll even say Nate Gustafson, in case you're Googling yourself with
that variation. Email
me if you find this page, eh?
(The glut of normal Scandanavian names make it impossible to find
high school comrades online. Larson, Johnson, Peterson, etc. Speaking
of Gustafsons, Kurt Gustafson, I want to know what you're up to
too.)
So that bent our brains in a good way. Plenty of stories still to
share, but I gotta get on with my busy, busy week. After three very
lethargic months, it's good to really need to get my tuckus in gear.
Back to Worky McWork!
Oh, but first - a
gallery of images from Madison.

Things
That Make Me Sad These Days
• Poor Bubba
the Lobster. 22
pounds and maybe
100+ years and he dies
when he takes up residence at the zoo. Don't they know,
"Fish gotta swim and birds gotta fly"?
Things That Make Me Happy These Days
• In a coupla few hours I'll be on a bus
to Madison
heading up to visit the supersnazzy Amihan and company.
• Okay, I usually refrain from talking about my penchant for reality
teevee on my blog, but this is hilarious. I was reading
the Survivor
message boards on Television
Without Pity. I got Kent hooked on Survivor a couple
seasons ago, so sometimes watch it together. Last night I was trying
to recall the handful of superfunny comments I read about the second
episode. One was comments about the size of James'
nostrils and later someone said that he must be a supersmeller.
That cracked me up. Later, it the episode, they showed the totally
great Janu
in her glasses. I erupted in laughter, stifled a spit take for about
two minutes straight, and Kent looked at me like I was crazy. I
remembered another superb comment - that with the night vision camera,
Janu
in her glasses is the spitting image of Henry
Kissinger. HI-larious.
• As a palette cleanser on my usually very serious Netflix
list, I got Anchorman:
The Legend of Ron Burgundy. I laughed a heckuva lot more
than I thought I would. Especially at the gang war between the anchorman
teams. The PBS guys cracked my shit up, "No commericials. No mercy."
• Katharine
Hepburn's egg seperating scene in Woman
of the Year. Ha!
• I like Dioramamrama's
quilt
for her dad , but it's the pic
of him and his dog that's the real charmer! And this
reminds me of when I was talking to Heather and she was trying to
think of a gift for her dad. I was talking about my
fleece-backed quilts, and the lightbulb lit over her
head. She said, "My dad likes to nap! I could make him a quilt."
I really liked that declartive statement. "My dad likes to nap."
Who doesn't?
Things That Make Me Boogie These Days
• Medium iced lattes from Metropolis
and a day old roll.
• That they arrested BTK.
Not that I was fretting over it. I knew nothing about him til L&O:SVU
did an episode based on him. But I think that's great that they
caught the guy.
• Reach
Out in the Darkness by Friend and Lover.
• Turning
Japanese by the Vapors. When I was 10 years old, I remember
being perched by my boom box forever waiting to tape this.
• Clients came out of the woodwork this week. I seriouly suspect
that they all synchornized themselves behind my back. It's uncanny
how my client workload can from lethargic to bursting overnight.
• The prospect of 8 hours of the bus this weekend. I la-la-love
the limbo of travel. Do some of my best thinking in transit. My
head is swimming with ideas and I look forward to getting them captured
in my sketchbook.

Allllllllriiiiiiiight
It is March. It is not February. It was sunny today. Super.
Things are on the upswing. Yesterday on my adventures downtown,
I saw five people I've seen before, from five different places -
a bike messenger who lives in my building to a very odd bird I saw
on the red line. Those kind of coincidences/patterns/repitition
crossing my path again, lets me know I'm on the right one.
This morning I hoofed it to my lovely neighborhood coffeehouse,
Metropolis.
As I got my beverage, I spied a sign that announced the movie they'd
be showing tonight. Funny
Bones. One of my all-time favorites. And I say that as
a movie junkie. I mentioned it to the owner how much I liked it,
and agreed with him how underrated it was. I looked towards the
ceiling to think, "What am I doing at 6 pm?"
Now, I'm sitting at Metropolis,
watching Funny
Bones, nursing and iced chai and working. Meanwhile,
at the Agerbeckorium I'm taping America's Next Top Model and Law
& Order.
Not too shabby.

Demographics
I was toolin' through all my email addresses this morning and
came across an offer for car insurance. [Note: I do not drive,
do not own a car] And the first question to answer to get a quote
was "zipcode of where you park your car at night." Of course,
since I don't have a car, I've never thought of this. Then I thought
about someone who's filter was to look at the world through what
zipcodes people park in at night and what that told them about
the people they met.
Or someone who looks at the whole world through brands of handbags
and footwear.
Or someone who looks at the whole world through people with children
and without.
Or someone who looks at the whole world through library card records.
Or someone who looks at the whole world through collections of
items at the grocery store checkout.
Or someone who...?
