Viva
la Quality!
Quality and great customer service do
still exist!
First, it should be said, I had my first Dell
computer for six whole years with no problems. Got all my value
and use outta that puppy. Six years later, I retired it and got
another Dell. No brainer. Good experiences with Dell, get another
Dell. Well, five months into this second one and the harddrive crashes.
Ugh. Double ugh. Five months! It took awhile to get customer service
folks on the phone with Dell, but two out of three were great. And
the woman who came onsite and replaced the harddrive was lovely.
Okay, so my Dell is up and running and everything is okay. Still
perplexed about the five-month-old harddrive and doubting Dell's
quality. I'm the type of person who takes every darn purchase very
seriously. I believe you vote with your dollars. I believe you should
invest in quality and that things should last a long time.
Like William Morris said,
"Have nothing in your houses that
you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful"
True.

So I own a pair of Dansko
clogs. I LOVE them. I bought
them because the standing for my
graphic facilitation work had me aching.
The Danskos really are the best shoes if you have to stand a lot
for work. Well-constructed. Great quality. These are my first pair,
but I know they'll last a really long time.

My one small problem, was that when I walk they are mostly good.
But being clogs, they just move and rub a bit. Therefore, I was
looking to get a pair of Dansko Erika
or Janika,
lace up styles. Same great soles, but lace ups to keep the shoes
still as I hoof it around town.
I went to Danko's site and looked up stores. Called a handful and
no one had the Erikas or the Janikas. *sigh*
I noticed that Dansko had a phone number wrong on their site and
emailed Dansko about it. Got a quick thank you email from them.
No sweat.
This week, I realized that I just wasn't going to find these in
person. So, I took the small risk and ordered them from Zappos.com.
I'll order shoes online when I already know the shoes and the size.
And Zappos.com's free shipping and free return shipping make it
easy, and the risk small.
So, I ordered a handsome pair of Dansko black Janikas Wednesday
morning. Okay. Done. Glad to have that shoe search off my brain.
Had lunch with the lovely Richelle,
who is very lovely, despite mocking my love of Esperanto. ;)
Got back from lunch with an email from Nate, a customer service
representative from Dansko, thanking me for the email last week.
(I had already forgotten about it.) He said he wanted to send a
shoe care package and a $20 coupon on the next pair of shoes.
Heck, sounds good by me! I sent my mailing address.
Then I thought, "I oughta call Zappos..."
I talked to a woman from Zappos.com. First off, my shoes had
already shipped. Just a few hours after my order! And while
they didn't take manufacturer's coupons, they do price match. In
the next minute, she found a site that sold the same shoes for $30-some
dollars less! She credited back $30-some back to my card! I thanked
her profusely, very pleased with the call and the service.
And later Wednesday, I got a second email from Nate of Dansko, thanking
me for my testimonial about the shoes and sharing the DanskoLove,
he wrote:
"Viva la Dansko !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Got a great laugh out of that.
By 2:00 pm Thursday, my Danskos arrived. Shoes ordered 9:00 am Wednesday.
Care package and coupon on the way for my third
pair of Danskos.

Praise for Zappos.com!
Viva la Dansko !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gifts!
Besides the gift of my friendship with Billy, he and his son Jay
gave me this astounding bowl today!

The pattern, font, colors and the fact that I'm a Slob with a capital
S - all perfect and very funny.

Two
Strikes

This photo perfectly fit my mood when I clicked the button. Two
X's. Knockout x 2. Things have been super stinky here, not worth
going into detail. Just a lot of hooey.
Thankfully, after this pic was taken, my Friday improved, and I
did manage to accomplish something on a vexing day.
Hopefully better news soon.

Ups
and Downs
I'm back from my week in Minnesota, safe but not quite sound. I
love my family, but I don't love the preponderance of smokers! The
exposure to all that smoke gave me a nasty headcold. I was choking
on my swollen throat Wednesday morning. Five liters of liquids later,
I'm feeling more human.
On the computer front, my four-month-old Dell desktop has a harddrive
problem! Just last night, my friend Pat described the frequnecy
of bad harddrives from Dell he's encountered at work lately. So,
I'm relieved that I should be able to get my four months of data
and that it's a hardware thing, not a virus or something more nefarious.
And thankfully, I don't have so many client projects. I don't have
folks banging on my virtual door. And a second thankfully, is that
I've got this laptop to keep me connected and working. BUT I don't
have access to either my address book or the emails on the desktop,
so my hands are tied getting back to a few folks. I apologize if
you're waiting to hear from me. If you sent an email before
May 3rd and are waiting a response, please email me again. Especially,
the woman from America's Second Harvest and the woman emailing about
a graphic facilitation project in October!
I got the computer problem diagnosed with the helpful Suresh on
Dell's online chat. He had to call to confirm the onsite tech person's
dispatch number. He asked for "Mr. Brandy." And quickly apologized
when he heard he was talking to a woman. hee hee. Last time I was
called Mr. Brandy was years ago when we ordered Asian food at work
at Ernst & Young and mine was marked Mr. Brandy. hee.
On the Numo front, he did an awesome job traveling.
It feels silly to say I'm proud of him, but I am
darn proud of him. And everyone was super nice at the airports and
on the airplanes. My anxiety about that was unfounded.
And second-hand smoke aside, I had a lovely visit with family and
friends in Minnesota.
In the interest of keeping this post from rambling on, I'll cut
it short and hopefully write more soon when I'm not feeling so disconnected.
Stay tuned...

We're
Off!
In more ways than one. My desktop computer is still kaput. Still
don't know how much information I'll be able to recover. I'm heading
out the door with Numo the hedgehog, and we're about to take our
first trip together, flying to Minnesota to meet family and friends.
Adventure or insanity, you decide.

NO
WAY!
Craziness here. Sunday was Loosetooth.com's birthday. Monday I felt
like crud with a angry stomach and aching head. This morning I was
well and ready to roll. Then my four-month-old Dell desktop hit
a major snag and I've been trying to repair it the last seven hours.
Tomorrow, I got to Minnesota for a week. Tomorrow I travel with
Numo the hedgehog on an airplane.
I'm typing from my laptop, taking deep breaths, knowing that everything
will work out eventually.
