The sunburn.

Anne hooked me up with Aloe Vera gel. It's heaven. Anne is a true pal.

Maxwell Street
Maxwell Street Market is a Chicago institution. It survives, even after being moved off Maxwell Street. I had never been. Never saw the original incarnation. Today, I went with my very good friend Billy and his very lovely wife Tuesday. It was a swell Sunday morning wandering up and down Canal nee Maxwell Street.

It is sorta a flea/farmers market. You can get fruit, spices, power tools, brooms, used books, questionable dented canned food, cheap underwear, ktochkes, (probably bootleg) DVDs, more power tools, door knobs, bicycles, bedding, knockoff designer stuff. I scored a $3 elephant statue thingy with lots of character and a $10 iron. I've been hoping to replace my 15 year old plastic body iron with an old-school heavy as a mofo iron like my Grandma has. It's looks like it's in good shape, and the cloth cord is in fine shape. Gotta try it out.

Here are some shots:

Tuesday treated me to a virgin Pina Colada. Thanks, T! It hit the spot.

Snocone down!

Epilogue: Billy, Tuesday and I headed north and had a delicious lunch at Svea in Andersonville. I had a large appetite and ordered the Viking breakfast. Swedish pancakes, swedish sausage, browned taters, two eggs and toast! I ate it ALL. *whew* With my last bite, Tuesday quipped, "Now you'll have a Viking nap."

I was right in my friend Anne's hood, so I toddled off to her place to meet up. As we sat and visiting, I didn't feel well. I felt kind of hot and strange, like when I react adversely to shellfish. But I was nowhere near shellfish. I was flummoxed, but tried not to worry about it.

Before I left, I used Anne's bathroom. As soon and I saw my reflection, I thought, "You idiot! You're sunburned."

The good news is that it's been so long since I've been sunburned that I forgot what it felt like. The bad news is that I'm a dork who also forgets that even if it's 55 degrees out, 3 hours of walking around in the sun will get you sunburned. Doofus.

Good morning, loyal readers. Very, very quick post. Life is good, wheels are turning, ideas are brewing. I am woefully behind on my blogs. I'm running out the door for a trip to NYC to feast my eyes on arts for days. More soon!

p.s. Loosetooth.com turned SEVEN on May 1!

102 Films

Jim Emerson wrote an article about "101 102 Movies You Must See Before..." you become a film critic. I don't aspire to become a film critic. In fact, I value my movies as my one non-productive hobby. I love watching 'em, but I don't feel terribly intellectual or erudite about them.

For laffs, here's the movies I've seen bolded, comments in italics.

2001: A Space Odyssey
(Big Kubrick fan, but Barry Lyndon, Lolita and Eyes Wide Shut are my favorites)
The 400 Blows
8 1/2 (Fellini's Juliet of the Spirits is my all-time fave, tied with Harold and Maude)
Aguirre, the Wrath of God
(I saw Herzog's Fitzcarraldo first. That one charmed me more)
Alien
All About Eve
Annie Hall
(Uh, I don't get why this one charms so many people. I've never found neurotic characters endearing.)
Apocalypse Now
Bambi

The Battleship Potemkin
The Best Years of Our Lives
The Big Red One
The Bicycle Thief
The Big Sleep
Blade Runner
Blowup
Blue Velvet
Bonnie and Clyde
Breathless
Bringing Up Baby
Carrie
Casablanca

Un Chien Andalou
Children of Paradise / Les Enfants du Paradis
Chinatown
Citizen Kane
(Finally saw this last year. It held strong against the hype for me.)
A Clockwork Orange
The Crying Game

The Day the Earth Stood Still
Days of Heaven
Dirty Harry
The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie
Do the Right Thing
La Dolce Vita
Double Indemnity
Dr. Strangelove

Duck Soup
E.T. -- The Extra-Terrestrial
Easy Rider

The Empire Strikes Back
The Exorcist
Fargo
Fight Club
(A favorite. I own it, and I only own a dozen DVDs. Glad it was added as the 102nd movie)
Frankenstein
The General
The Godfather, The Godfather, Part II
Gone With the Wind
GoodFellas
The Graduate
(Love the tone of it)
Halloween
A Hard Day's Night
Intolerance
It's a Gift
It's a Wonderful Life
Jaws
The Lady Eve
Lawrence of Arabia
M
Mad Max 2 / The Road Warrior
The Maltese Falcon
The Manchurian Candidate (A BIG fave. Lansbury knocked my socks off)
Metropolis
Modern Times
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Meh. I'll publicly admit I'm not a MP fan.)
Nashville
(I got hooked on Altman with Short Cuts - I enjoy seeing all of his movies, even if I don't like all of them.)
The Night of the Hunter (A pleasure seeing this one for the first time in Grant Park in Chicago.)
Night of the Living Dead
North by Northwest
Nosferatu
On the Waterfront
Once Upon a Time in the West
Out of the Past
Persona
Pink Flamingos
Psycho
Pulp Fiction
Rashomon
Rear Window
Rebel Without a Cause
Red River
Repulsion
The Rules of the Game
Scarface
The Scarlet Empress
Schindler's List
The Searchers
The Seven Samurai
Singin' in the Rain
Some Like It Hot

A Star Is Born
A Streetcar Named Desire
Sunset Boulevard
Taxi Driver
The Third Man
Tokyo Story
Touch of Evil
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
Trouble in Paradise
Vertigo
West Side Story
The Wild Bunch
The Wizard of Oz (Soon I'll be working on a personal graphic facilitation project, drawing this movie to demostrate what the heck I do for a living.)

Looks like I've got some catching up to do. If this were a list of "The Best Movies You've Never Heard Of" I'd probably have a higher percentage. I'm a magnet for the obscure. Too bad Netflix has started throttling my DVDs. I've been a hyper zealous customers singing their praises from the rooftops. I've officially started getting their shoddy treatment. It sucks.
