Whim

Whim
Day?
In May I totally forgot Whim Day. So sad. I was in a freelancing
nadir. I always try to rack up the positives of my life, like
the zero commute time, my time mostly being my own. Most months
not worrying about money. I've got more time than money, but that's
my M.O.. Creating a life that's mine. All awesome, rockin' stuff.
Every so often work lulls. It gets me in Hustle Mode. It makes
me pinch pennies. It also makes me introvert on the site, because
I'm offline hustling and pinching pennies.
Work has turned around with two graphic facilitation projects
that were booked early May to happen in June, and one that literally
surfaced Monday and was done yesterday. Since June 8th it's been
- New Orleans for 2.5 days (work) to Chicago for 2 days (home)
to New Haven for 5 days (work) to Chicago for 2 days (home) to
suburban Chicago for 1 day (work).
*whew* I need a nap!
I'm happy and proud of the work done on those 3 projects. I feel
I helped make all three events more positive experiences.
I've got about 3 dozen emails to write, but my paws are tired!
So, I think I'll take my monthly Whim Day early. I debated heading
downtown for one movie, or North for a different one. I'm heading
South for Art School Confidential and probably Wow Bao buns...?

From the Peabody
Museum site:
The preparation and design of
this exhibition, which required five years to complete, was directed
by Shirley Hartman; it opened to the public on May 12, 1972.

Viva
la Charlie Rose!
My morning has been made! I am a big, big fan of Charlie
Rose.
I get terrible television reception. There's no way I'm paying for
cable. I really only have a couple shows I watch religiously and
kinda wavy. Instead of wavy Charlie, I opted for an Audible.com
subscription. Every weekday I get an email notifying me that the
newest show is ready for download. This morning -
Charlie
Rose: My Heart Surgery
!!! Charlie is back! Hooray! The last couple months he's been recovering
from mitral valve replacement surgery. They had solid replacement
hosts, but it did reinforce what a gem Mr. Rose is.
I clapped giddily at the opening of his first show back:
"As I was saying, before I was
so rudely interrupted... by my heart... you should know I've missed
you and never doubted I'd come back. And you shouldn't worry that
I'm coming back too soon."
Today is made. Everything else is gravy. I head off to O'Hare to
another excellent graphic
facilitation project.

Flax
is Where It's At
My
friend Amihan makes some superfantastic* flaxseed crackers:

She's in town and invited us over to Darryn's (her host, our friend)
for dinner. Much fun, good food and good conversation. Bonus: flaxseed
crackers.
*You may doubt the tastiness potential of flaxseed crackers. Go
ahead and doubt. The crackers are unwaveringly confident in their
tastiness.

New
Wheels
1986-ish: I used to adore
rollerskating as a kid. I loved skating around my neighborhood.
Less keen on skating at the Great Skate in Fridley. I'm a solo skater,
not a big rink skater.
2005 (2004?): Leah
asked me to be part of the Windy
City Rollers. Wow, in a parallel universe I am The Bomber
in a roller derby league. In this universe I am uninsured and a
hate roughhousing.
Today: I had it in the back
of my head to try rollerskating again. There is a backstory, but
it's clunky and not terribly interesting.
I headed out to my big, annual neighborhood sale with Jim
and Billy.
After puttering around and looking at other people's junk, Jim headed
home. Billy and I tarried on. We turned a corner and I spot some
big, nearly-new Skechers rollerskates!
Billy said, "Even your feet aren't big enough for those."
"Don't be so sure."
[I am a 5'2" female, but my athletic shoes are men's 92F's. I am
very stable.]
I try on a rollerskate and it fits!
And get this -
S-i-x d-o-l-l-a-r-s.

I schlepped my new wheels to an afternoon meeting. Great meeting.
I get a cup of confidence and tell myself I'm going to skate the
five blocks home.
I leave the meeting and don my new skates. Holy crap! It's been
nearly two decades since I've been on skates. Sidewalks are all
of a sudden terrifying.
I realize this is a no-go and I try to take off my skates
standing up. I was not
wearing
my smartypants. My legs went out from under me - *BOOM*
- on my butt. My butt was fine. I also landed on my left wrist.
It was not happy.
Note: no more skating until
I get wrist guards.
A woman happened to be biking by just as I got closer to the Earth.
She called out, "That looked like fun until you fell!"
p.s. At the same time as I was falling in my ass in Chicago, my
friends Cinnamon
and Andrew
were getting married in New
Orleans! Wuh? They just had their 10 year anniversary
of non-married-Cinnamon-and-Andrew-ness.
I had absolutely NO idea they wanted to make it official. It was
all hush-hush. I'm mega surprised, but I can only wish them the
very best.

(For
the record, today is the first day I thought, "Hmmm, maybe I need
a podcast.")
