My week
Sunday
Watsonville, CA. At the International Visual Practitioners Conference. Fantastic people. Beautiful location. I took video and photos of the ocean and the skittish little shorebirds. Got a ride up to San Francisco with Bob Horn, and had a fabulous conversation. Met up with my very delightful friend, Emily Mellberg.
Monday
Official Emily Mellberg Day. We walked around the Mission, ate well, had great conversation. She became part of my art. Emily kicks ass. Got on a plane at 11:28pm.
Tuesday
Got back to Chicago at 5:30 am. Slept okay on the plane - I sort of rotated every 15 minutes or so, like a rotisserie chicken, across my two seats. Spent all day creating a Powerpoint presentation for a workshop I was giving at 8am the next day. Worked off the adrenaline of the weekend and the excitement about the next day. Got the presentation done at about 2 am.
Wednesday
Taught the workshop from 8:30 - noon? Went splendidly. I got to talk about something I love - building websites. I think everyone should have a website and was very happy to teach 20 women entrepreneurs how to build their own. Got good feedback and felt very comfortable in front of the group. I love teaching. And happily I'll be teaching the class at least one more time, so I can improve on it. The only reason I was standing was because of adrenaline, and I knew I was going to crash as soon as the class was over. Sure enough - I headed to the library and couldn't stay awake for more than 30 seconds. The plan was to go home, relax, watch Brazil and relax some more. No dice. I watched Brazil, but managed to construct the most difficult part of my costume while I watched it.
Thursday
I had a deadline for a great branding project I'm working on on Friday. So, today it was another bang-up job on a Powerpoint presentation. As I was waiting for my the email to go through - I designed the invite for this year's Open House.
Friday
COSTUME DAY! I got the last parts of my costume (foam rubber, velcro, mirrored car window tinting film, duct tape, a vest and tube socks), and had the rest of the day to construct my best costume to date! I have to say by Friday night I didn't want to touch hot glue or duct tape for the next 3 months, but the costume has turned out splendidly. Of course, photos will be posted online.
Saturday
Animation Day. Tonight, I am going to a party (with my new favorite person) and there will be a Scary Movie Film Fest. So, I'm trying to eke out an 11th hour Flash animation to contribute. Had a terribly saucy and energetic conversation with my friend Billy this morning. I'm his favorite motivational speaker. And he's the one that called me a Pacer. But now - Back to the grindstone...

Tomorrow morning I am running a workshop for the Women's Business Development Center. I thought I should create a new post, rather than grabbing a screen shot for the presentation of this page, full of October-lovin' profanities. Doesn't make me a good educational influence.

It's another Fan-FUCKIN-tastic October. I've got so many amazing irons in the fire at the moment. I've got the imperative to create a Flash animation for Halloween and MAN, OH, MAN is it going to kick ass and take names. Two words: FREAK SHOW. I'll be posting it to my site after 10/28.

(Or maybe it's the uber-loud Garbage Version 2.0 and the 30 oz of Coke talking.)

I hate to get all Ricky Fitts (American Beauty) too often, but there really is so much beauty in the world. Like walking through the Dominick's parking lot and walking a past a guy waiting in a car listening to The Fifth Dimension (Age of Aquarius).

Tonight I walked by my window as I headed back to my closet/office. The moon was huge and bright over the lake and it just stopped me in my tracks. The view of from my apartment is one of the top ten contributors to my quality of life. I stopped and took a picture with my digital camera, posted it to my site and sent it to a load of friends (in about 10 minutes - got to love the technical world of wonders we live in). My friend Mark Ehling wrote back and sent me this poem that my photo reminded him of. (Thanks so much, Mark!)

A Clear Midnight

This is the hour O Soul, thy free flight into the wordless,
Away from books, away from art, the day erased, the lesson
done,
Thee fully forth emerging, silent, gazing, pondering the
themes thou lovest best,
Night, sleep, death and the stars.

-- Walt Whitman

On top of the world Friday, in a cloud of confusion Saturday. Let's see what happens Sunday.

"That's life, that's what people say.
You're riding' high in April,
Shot down in May.
But I know I'm gonna change that tune,
When I'm back on top in June."

Great things about today:
1) The guy in the Hancock Building costume outside the Hancock Building handing out flyers about the Hancock Building.
2) The two young women who were sitting outside FAO Schweetz at Water Tower Place. One was blowing candy bubbles to the other who was sitting a foot away from her, catching the bubbles in her mouth.
3) Getting 3 kick ass emails from 3 kick ass people in a row.
4) The warm air today.
5) People on the street were dressed very well today. Fall brings the best out in people's style.
6) Dancing to Stereo Total in pjs.
7) Belting out "Something's Gotta Give."
8) Singing a great bitter, seething rendition of Cry Me a River.
9) My cashier at Old Navy who told me to have a beautiful weekend. I think I shall.
10) Being able to buy clothes for myself.
11) A great teller at Bank One who gave me a new business ATM card. She was nice too.
12) Orange juice, and lots of it.
13) Knowing that I have a kick ass weekend in front of me.
14) Over using the words "kick ass."
15) This quote Kate sent me about Al Gore - "Gore is a buffed-up schoolmarm with murder in his eye."
16) Making plans with people I totally dig.

My life is really fucking awesome. If my life were always as busy, productive and filled with friends, ideas and compliments my head would explode with joy.

There is something to be said for listening to music really LOUD and belting out "Sunshine of Your Love" in a small room.

Working at home today made me realize what I miss most about it. All day pjs and singing REALLY LOUD. Want to know why singers love to sing Mac the Knife. Because it 1) is one big crescendo 2) There's silly names in it like Sukey Tawdry 3) There's that really long note at the end - "Now that Mackeeeeeeeee’s back in toooooooooooo ooooo ooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooow wwwwwww wwwwwww wwwww wwwwnnn (gasp) Look out, old Macky's back" - And you feel like a total bad ass if you can hold the note as well as Bobby Darin. And I can.

Three of my favorite voices - Chet Baker, Julie London and Bobby Darin.

Playlist today: Cardigans, James, Don McLean, Rufus Wainwright, Fatboy Slim, Cream, The Dukes of Stratoshpear (Xtc), Chet Baker, Johnnie Ray (Cry is *such* a fucking bad ass song), Bobby Darin.

Something I've become more and more aware of this year is the idea of Public Self and Private Self. I believe this is because as a freelancer, I'm always coming into a workplace with skills but no personality. I have one, of course, but my new coworkers have no idea what it is yet. So, I am ultra-aware of what I am revealing about myself as I go along.
Historically, I've always been an Open Book. And I think there's a lot of plusses to that - sincerity, honesty, what you see is what you get. But at my last gig, of 3 years and countless hours, I felt like my Private Self was too much of my Public Self. The problem is that part of your Public Self is your Professional Self, and I made no distinction there.
Now that I'm freelancing I've flipped that balance, so that now people get to see my Professional Self, but less of my Public Self. Now, don't get me wrong, most of these distinctions are academic, I am who I am, and even in an introductory interview you're going to see my vivacious personality. :)
So, now I am at a great new gig, with fantastic, smart people and yesterday it was all about Brandy and her Private Self. I was on this geeky riff about my Secret Life as a Biologist. Now, I don't think anyone there minded or cared, but I still felt like I opened up my brain and let all this minutiae spill out of my head. It's amazing and a little scary that my mind can pull up esoteric shit I haven't thought about in a friggin decade. Like adipose cells. And Eppendorf Micropipetters.
And this weblog is a perfect case for the need for Private and Public Selves. From the get go, I knew I didn't want this to be a "Hey, Welcome to Brandy Agerbeck's Brain" endeavor. It's been challenging to be editor to my Open Book self. And the challenge continues. I'm feeling and thinking a lot more things than should ever be on this page. This is a very well-mannered tip of the iceberg.
Well, this weekend I'm taking my Private, Public and Professional Selves down to Champagne-Urbana to visit the Fabulous Four down there (Dan and Gwen and Shea and Kathleen). I am so looking forward to be swimming in all that friend goodness.

So, I am well aware that it's October 4th and my homepage still says Summer 2000. That'll change soon. I am working on a Halloween Flash animation that will replace the Lemonhead one.

It's friggin' October! Bite my ass.
I dig October, it's my favorite month, but I can't believe 2000 is nearly over. Again, bite my ass.
On the bright side, I came up with a fantastic Halloween costume, so all my friends should invite me to their Halloween parties to see it.
