The
Halloween that Wasn't
Yeah, yeah, I know it's not even Halloween proper yet, but so far
this has been the non-Halloween. First off, it's an odd holiday
this year since it falls squarely in the middle of the week on Hump
Day. Seems that people are opting for the weekend before, b/c the
weekend after in November and that's just lame. My social calendar
this Halloween involved a party Thursday night and one on Friday.
Well, Thursday I got blindsided by a client which totally threw
off my afternoon. My costume wasn't finished and I was just feeling
exhausted and exasperated. I tried to bust ass on the costume to
make it to the party. Then I burned myself with my glue gun right
under my right thumbnail. Nothing tragic, but it made me realize
that if I kept pushing myself, I wouldn't enjoy myself or be terribly
good company.
But
I did stay home and finished my costume at a leisurely pace. You
can see it below.
So,
Friday night I was getting ready for the second party. Before
heading out the door, I called one of the hosts to ask if there
was anything I could pick up at the grocery on my way over. I
got his nephew on the phone who had no idea where he was. My question
unanswered, I debated on how to get to the shindig. A cab would
be swifter and more expensive, but the CTA would be cheaper and
I was hoping to see people in costume on the train. I opted for
the latter, with my moth "mask" in hand, since I'd have troubles
with the turnstiles and doorways if I were wearing it.
Not
a soul on the train was in costume. Very disappointing.
So,
I walk a chunk from the train station to the house. With written
address in hand, I looked for the part.y No house labeled the
address I had, one seemed right, but unlabeled. And although it
was superbly decorated for the holiday, it appeared empty. Yeah,
I was early-ish, 9:30 for a 8:00 start. But no life inside, no
one answered the door. So, I was cold, tired and already feeling
antisocial so I took a cab home. I washed of my makeup. I went
online to solve the Mystery of the Missing Party, and the evite
didn't hold any clues. So, I watched a movie and chalked it up
as not meant to be. A friend I called much earlier called me around
11:30 pm, with a cell phone totally broken up. Can't understand
a word. So, I wait for him to leave a message. A bit cryptic,
but it appears that the evite address was 2 blocks off. He gets
a hold of me half an hour later and confirms this suspicion. But
I can't be budged from my pj's, clean face, and movie.
So
that's that. No public showing of my costume, no socializing,
no witnessing of inebriated masquerades. No sweat since my favorite
part of Halloween is to *make* the costume. And I think I'll continue
making costumes each year for the love of it, without need to
debut them at parties. I'll send out my own Halloween e-greeting
in costume. Those readers on in my address book - keep an eye
out on 10/31.

Well,
my loved ones far away are giving me flack for not writing much
here these days. There's just not a whole lot to report.
Let's
see - I did just come back from the Visual Practitioner's Conference
in Watsonville, California. It was a good but exhausting time.
2 1/2 days was far too short, and Lynn Carruthers put it well
by summing up the interactions as "wedding conversations." For
the most part that's what it was. But it was a good conference,
and now I've got to update the site with this year's images.
By
the way, traveling out of O'Hare post-9/11 was a breeze. Traveling
out of San Francisco airport was a total clusterfuck. It was truly
shocking how long the security line was. You keep walking and
walking, floored at the hundreds of people waiting , and the distance.
Some estimated it was a mile long. Granted the line moved swiftly,
but it still took a full 30 minutes to get through. I timed it.
And once you get to the security checkpoint they made you take
off everything but your clothing, i.e. all jewelry and watches.
Plus the laptops had to come out and go into bins. None of that
is unreasonable in itself, but was very poorly facilitated. There
was no warning in all the time you were in line. That would have
given people a chance to get all their jewelry safely into a purse
or bag pocket. Instead you're standing there getting barked at
by grumpy workers while all your stuff is going through the x-ray
machine on pieces, mixed in with everyone else's stuff - breaking
Personal Airport Security Rule #1. Like I said, a clusterfuck.
I don't know how other airports are fairing, so ask around before
you travel. Like I said, O'Hare was a breeze, the only big change
was having your i.d. at various points with your boarding pass.
Things
in Chicago have been gray, wet and quiet. I was up late working
on my costume for Halloween shindigs tonight and tomorrow night.
It hasn't come together yet, much more work to do.
Lots
of client bits and pieces to attend to...

I
am in lovely, but foggy Watsonville, California now.
Still
haven't figured out the Halloween costume.
Later...

Wow,
I'm becoming a blog slacker. I think it's just because there hasn't
been a whole lot to report. Not a whole lot of work these days,
but that kind of lull always makes me get back into making stuff.
Presently, that's dolls and quilts. And there's a whole lot of changes
I want to do to loosetooth.com. I just have to stop beating myself
up for not getting those changes made long ago. C'est la vie.
I've
been spending lots of quality time in the apartment, MUCH piddling
around. Organizing some stuff, stir up other stuff. I'm in Law
and Order bliss and watching loads of movies.
That's
about it from here. More (probably much) later.
