On My Person
By the end of some days the content of my bag is just too darn interesting to go unnoted. Besides the ubiquitous cd player, cds, and Nalgene bottle is (in order of acquistion):
• My often present sketchbook
• Usual pencil case full of black and white writing implements
• Bag of freebies from Planned Parenthood, after getting my quarterly, magical Depo shot: lubes samples, flavored condoms, dental dam.
• 2 oz left of a 6 oz bag of Garrett's Caramel Corn . So buttery my heart palpitates eating it.
• a pair of red pants from New York and Company. Right size, comfy, 40% off, need to be hemmed per usual. Another win in my quest for some bright pants.
• Bright yellow tshirt from Chicago Architecture Foundation's store that has Daniel Burnham's quote, "Make no little plans." It cracks me up that the one line of text falls right across the peak of my boobs.
Rick Steves' Postcards from Europe, free Tour Experience DVD, travel newsletter, and tour brochure. Steves spoke at the Savvy Traveller bookstore tonight, before going to WTTW for a pledge drive showing of 6 of his newest shows. I've always liked his approach and the armchair travelling watching the shows. Great to hear him speak and confirm that he is a darn good guy. Great philosophy, pratices what he preaches - great combination of business sense and solid principles. *psst* Over here is the drawing I made listening to him.
• Disc 2 of 2 of The Singing Detective, from Netfix. Perfect to watch while I spend tomorrow but doing the good but boring work of finishing the cookbook.

Now, sushi and finishing my drawing of Rick Steves' talk.

I am in Champaign-Urbana on the eve of a feast. After feeding us tasty food, Shea was spooning white sugar into a pot on the stove. Darryn asked, "What are you making?"

Shea: "Another batch of Dr. Atkins can bite my ass."

Here's the antidote to that grouchy pic below, on Nov 18. I think if I were stranded on a desert island, I could survive with a mirror, comb and a couple of hairbands. At least for awhile.

I'm talking to Billy right now. He's just returned from his annual trip to Amsterdam and he's all rejuvenated and shit. He said he feels like his work is back like an old friend. Even better, like a new girlfriend. Not a get-some-action-Friday-night girlfriend, but a good thing -

"I've got a crush on my work right now."

Sister Visit
My lil' sister, Burgundy Johnson, was in town this weekend with her lovely mother-in-law Kathleen. Much fun and tired toes cavorting around with them, Kathleen's good friend Sue and her lovely three daughters.

Today, I distracted Burgundy and Kathleen from shopping with the big shiny bean. :^)

This is how I feel this morning. Things are going just fine, I just feel just like this right now.

Dear Mr. Greenaway,

I curse you. I praise you.

Of course, I'm along for the journey.

Admiringly,

As the credits to The Tulse Luper Suitcases: Vaux to the Sea started last night, the woman two seat to my right said, "Oh. Franke Potente was in this."

"She was the blonde prostitute in the cinema," I said flatly because the woman coughed through the first third (of the second part) of the movie and I wasn't feeling generous.
______

Then I made a beeline to the bathroom, where the woman in the next stall ask me questions trying to ascertain how much of last night's first part she missed.

She said that it was making her crazy. I don't know if it was missing the last part or what she saw before she had to go.

Not exchanges one has every day.

I was giddy at the end of the second installment. Eager to see the third tonight.

Yesterday was a good day. Finally got caught up on my blog archives. Then good conversation and art with Rob (a fave piece). Library. Peter Greenaway at the Chicago Humanities Festival.

Trying to build momentum today. Some resistance, some encouragement.

And it's this Economist Cover that sums up everything.

Pics from wandering with Rob:

Internal Soundtrack.
I often wake up with a song in my head. This morning, "Love You Madly" by Cake. Yesterday, "In the Aeroplane Ove the Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel. Sunday, "Multiplication" by Bobby Darin.

Still off - like just now boiling water for tea nad leaving the lid off the hot pot. But planning a trip to the library today. Feeding my brain is good. Getting out of this chair is better. Oh, and I employed the tried and true Twizzlers Therapy last night.

But this is helping quite a bit already today:

Audiopharmacology Mix
You're Doing Better - Ken Nordine
Don't rain on my parade - Bobby Darin
Hotel Yorba - The White Stripes
Holiday Inn - Stereo Total
Patricia- Billy May & His Orchestra
Honeycomb - Jimmie Rodgers
A Little Less Conversation - Elvis Presley
Let's Work Together - Canned Heat
I Thank You - Sam & Dave
Weapon of Choice - Fatboy Slime
Danke Schoen - Wayne Newton
Brazil Theme - Michael Kamen
Mercy, Mercy, Mercy - The Buckinghams
Video - India.Arie
La La La Love You - The Pixies
Grazin' in the Grass - Friends of Distinction
Soul Bossa Nova - Quincy Jones
I'm Not Responsible - Tom Jones
Walkin' Down the Street - The Coctails
Stickshifts & Safetybelts - Cake
Sir Duke - Stevie Wonder
Happy Trails - Roy Rogers & Dale Evans

Seriously, What is WRONG with Me?
I just realized that after going for the ice cream for dessert last night, I left the freezer door open all night long.

BUT I've been getting great emails to cheer me up - including one with some very, very good news. (hooray.)

Blah.
Nearly got hit by a car earlier (driver's fault, not mine).
Reaching for lightswitches that aren't there tonight.
Crap scared outta me by bathroom lightbulb burning out with a Ka-POW!
Nobody came to my workshop today.
Milwaukee was nearly a bust - Cinnamon and Andrew saved the days.
I mucked up a phone conversation.
Spilled wax on myself just now.
I'm starving.
I'm tired.
I'm crabby.

Let's see if Thai Basil Fried Rice, Law & Order Criminal Intent, and drawing can cure what ails me.

This I Know
Music makes me happy.

News makes me sad.

More music, less news.

I just read "Kerry Concedes" and I am completely numb and empty.
It amazes me that people are so concerned with controlling individual rights - gay rights and abortion - that they can ignore the meta level of destruction - alienating the rest of the world, bankrupting the economy, Iraq?

All I can think is that this idiot is bankrupting our country and women will lose their reproductive rights. I think it over and over again.

Is it possible to feel angry and paralyzed at the same time?

I know it's possible to exist and be apolitical. I guess I'll have to figure out how. Life happens on so many levels, and I try to be aware on as many as I can. Perhaps I'll need to draw the blinds on a couple levels just to get through.

Life does go on - but it terrifies me at the moment.

Stating the Obvious
CNN.com sez:
"Projections: Bush strong in South, Kerry in Northeast"

No. Really?

This is why I am watching a movie, and not the noise on teevee.

Give That Woman an Oscar!
Oh holy moley! I watch A Woman Under the Influence last night. Gena Rowlands blew me away. Sure, Ellen Burstyn was good in Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, but Ms. Rowlands shoulda walked away with the gold.

Awards aside, WOW that was an amazing performance in a solid film. I think I'm going to have to start a list of incredible acting performances.

Man, she was captivating.
