Best
O' 2004
I'm trying to gauge the mood of 2004. It was a purdy good year.
Fairly productive. Little drama in my immediate realm. Flew by.
Many happy moments, few unhappy ones. Here's some standouts:
Netflix
I watched exactly 200 DVDs through Netflix
this year. 80 more than last year. Totally spoiled on DVDs coming
out closer and closer to their theater runs, spoiled by teevee shows
on DVD, spoiled by DVD commentaries. Best rentals:
The
Manchurian Candidate (1962)
Woman
Under the Influence
The
Five Obstructions
The
Singing Detective (1986)
Network
Home
Movie
In-theater standouts:
Playtime
(1967)
The
Falls
The
Tulse Luper Suitcases
BBQ Potato Chips
I've got this problem where my stomach is very disconnected from
my brain. I begrudgingly stop thinking/working to feed myself, it
takes forever for me to decide what to eat when confronted by a
restaurant menu and I pretty much never crave certain foods. The
rare occasions I do, I fill the urge. This year, BBQ potato chips.
Thunderbirds
Enthralling.
Friendship
I've said it before, I'll say it again - in friends, I've got an
embarrassment of riches.
Graphic Facilitation
Big, good thing this year. After eight years of doing the work,
I finally sat down and described
it. Finally created my marketing materials. Honestly,
had I not done anything else this year, only that, it would be a
productive year. January is about researching and seeking out new
partners in that realm.
Major Craftiness
I made a lot of stuff. I like making
stuff. Better yet, a lot of the stuff I made, was made
out of stuff I already had. Finished a lot of projects, versus adding
to the idea pile.
It was a year of more drawing, more
quilting. Definitely looking forward to more drawing
in the new year.
That's the rundown. Now it's time to take a hot bath, put on comfy
pj's and curling up with my sketchbook to finish out the year reflecting
and making grand schemes for the new year. It's geeky, but it's
my tradition. A fortuitously, my sketchbook is full at years end,
embarking on a new one for 2005.
Rock on.

I'm
really very happy that I didn't kill my sewing machine on Christmas
Day. I just picked it up from it's tune up. The lovely repairman
said that once it was se-fuzzed and tuned up, it was working just
fine. Yipee!

I'm really very sad that Jerry
Orbach died. Law
& Order is my favorite teevee show, and I spent countless
hours watching him. As he got older and was still on the show,
I willed him to become immortal so that I could watch him forever
and forever. Darn it, it didn't work. Very glad that his character
Lenny Briscoe retired on the show, so we could have a happier
exit.
Here's a lovely CNN
obit. Two quotes:
"I'm immensely saddened by the passing of not only a friend
and colleague, but a legendary figure of 20th-century show business,"
said Dick Wolf, creator and executive producer of the "Law & Order"
series, in a statement. "He was one of the most honored performers
of his generation. His loss is irreplaceable."
___
New Yorkers, particularly cops, loved him.
"The police? Oh, my God. It's a straight-up love affair with the
man," co-star Jesse L. Martin told the Philadelphia Inquirer."

The
new computer is here.
Since I didn't order a new monitor, there's not much to do with
it yet...

The
Life Aquatic
Yeah, I'm a Wes
Anderson fan, wanna make something of it? I think Rushmore
is a solid, brilliant movie. He uses Futura
Bold liberally. Love his style of stylized. I had heard
must hemming and hawing and sighing and groaning about The
Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.
There was no doubt I was going to see it, but I didn't want to go
and not like it.
No problem.
Loved it.
Erik
and I went this afternoon, 3:40pm. Packed theater.* The audience
laughed very little, mostly at the moments in the trailer they already
knew and some more obvious stuff. I thought it was hilarious - or
perhaps an adjective equidistance from "very funny" and "hilarious."
It's just not a gut buster; not that kind of humor. Half a dozen
times we were the only ones laughing. I knew there was a reason
I liked him. The
Bic Four-Color Pen - super.
And I love baby blue and red together - this film was drunk on that
color combo. And lots of water shots, love water. All that, and
Futura?
Oh, and while I'm praising - uh, I knew I really dug a few Zombies
songs, but had no idea how cool some lesser known stuff was/is.
I had them tucked in a spot just above one-hit-wonder status. Recently
heard the fantastic "You Make Me Feel Good" and The Life Aquatic
had "The Way I Feel Inside" well placed. Must investigate more.
*I've become a total curmudeon ala Statler and Waldorf about seeing
movies in theaters with other people. Ick. I'm spoiled by Netflix.
And I can not turn off the part of my brain that senses everyone
around me (I blame the facilitation experience). Therefore, I don't
see very many movies in the theater for a movie zealot. Normally,
I employ a weekday matinee method to avoid the masses. Usually works.

I'm
Here All Week
I really hate washing dishes. They needed be done but with my mopey,
stinky attitude yesterday, I wasn't going to wash dishes on Christmas.
Today was the day of reckoning. I've gotta remember that when I
gotta wash dishes I just have to blast my Torch
and Croon cd and pretend I'm playing Vegas, baby.
Another stack of dishes clean, another set of standards belted out.

Christmasness
"You are making a difference in this world... we made your
fondue recipe
and WOW! What fun! and yumm! (Hope you got your fondue pot for
Christmas)
I thank you, my kids thank you, our guests thank you!"
In this morning's Inbox from Mimi
Kirchner! She makes great dolls, and my personal favorite
are her bug
pins.
I feed on praise. So that was a very nice dose this morning.
I gotta admit I had a very un-Christmas yesterday. All alone,
watching movies, working on a new quilt. Broke (temporarily, I
think) my sewing machine. My Christmasness is all before and after
the day itself. Before with my Open Houses, and after with far
flung friends in town for the holidays. But yesterday I was a
bit mopey and stinky.
My unfestive day yesterday could have been corrected had I had
some Christmassy vittles in the house. Poor planning on my part.
I had curry lentil soup, beer bread and radishes. Sort of my version
of the Peanut's Thanksgiving of popcorn and toast.
Now I want eggnog, ham and peppermint bark...
Update: Tonight I went to Alise's where I ate
myself silly and ham and she sent me home with a carton of eggnog!
Two outta three ain't bad.

Woah.
I ordered my computer 7:00 pm Tuesday night and this morning I woke
up to a Dell

Woah. Neat.

Lub
Dub, Lub ____, Lub Dub
My heart just skipped a beat. I just ordered a new Dell computer,
finally retiring my old, faithful SIX year old Dell computer.
I squeezed all the life and computations out of it I could, until
I hit the zone of pushing-my-luck. Now I wait. Later, I get acclimated
to a new system and feel sorta dumb for awhile.

You are a true Chicagoan! You've probably lived
here for a long time, or are thoroughly
obsessed with the city and its history.
Congratulations! Maybe you should run for
office.

Waiting
outside of Water Tower Place today, I peoplewatched. Many, many
folks looked very zombie-like, not at all holiday-ish. Sort of befuddled
and overwhelmed by life.
Normally, I prefer clean-cut men, but I was noticing a lot of nice
beards. Maybe it's a Santa thing.

Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah,
Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah!
This morning I had a very long and vivid dream that I was on a
reality teevee show and the challenge was to stay in one room
(think small, classroom sized auditorium) and talk for eighteen
hours.
I tried to think of every story in my arsenal. I wish I could
remember details to see if they were my waking life stories or
invented ones.
I valiantly tried. I talked for six but wandered out of the room
which disqualified me. No one was in the room, and I didn't walk
to talk to myself.
