Numo's Oomph
I hate to say it, but tonight's the night I notice that Numo has lost his "oomph." Rather than nosy about, he curls up to sleep:

On his back, he quickly goes into snooze mode. Tonight I noticed snot bubbles, that led me to believe there's still the fluid in his lungs. Only a guess. Numo's my first hedgie and my first sick hedgie. I just spend lots of time with the Little Man.

Here he just looks peeved.

Dude, that's not a cat bed!

Gunther has taken residence in Numo's old cage. I let him be. He's comfy there, and it doesn't look like Numo will be moving back.

Hangin' Tough
Numo is hanging in there. He's not getting better, not worse. He's definitely lost all feeling in his back legs. That makes it easy to hold him on his back like this:

Gunther has been a very good nursing supervisor:

He likes to be close by, but doesn't get in the way.

Progress Report
Here's Numo getting his Ensure/medication:

And just a sweet pic:

He does have his tired eyes.

Nurse Brandy and Patient Numo
On Dr. Horton's orders, I moved Numo out of his two-story cage with wheel to a cushy, single level:

Here's the stuff I use to attend to Numo:

I fold a paper towel in half to prep the meds in their syringes. Three are in syringes. The fourth is just .02 CC and I put a drop of it on a worm. Numo chomps it down. After I few days of Numo wearing much of his medication, I began mixing it with Ensure. It helps a lot. The blue fleece is to hold him. A wet washcloth helps blot pee and mop up Ensure and liquid medications off of him. The purple container holds his treats. Toilet paper to catch the turds. All the medications and the food need to be refrigerated, so the plastic tray lives in the fridge.

His Medications, plus Ensure and baby food to help the meds tastier:

This is a cute pic, but it is a symptom of the problem:

Those sweet feets poking out of his igloo after he crawls in his his front paws.

Last night was the worst! I've been holding it together pretty well. Last night my mind was filled with the picture of the xray and thoughts about all the tough stuff going on in Numo's tiny body. It's good to know and hard to know. Late night worrying about my quilly loved one.

The (Not Good) Numo News
Oh my, what a morning. Hopefully, I'll make sense, b/c I sure am tired.

Here's the scoop from Dr. Horton. First time with her. I really like her. She took a look at him, pinched and looked for a reaction in Numo's back legs, x-rayed him, but couldn't draw blood from his itty bitty veins.

We looked at the xray and Dr. Horton said she could tell a lot from it.

Numo has a very large heart. Cardiomyopathy. Looking at the X-ray she said his heart took up 4/5 the space it could. The overworked heart (probably) has kicked out a blood clot (thrombosis) that caused the loss of function in the back legs. Plus he's got fluid in his lungs and a bladder infection! Poor little guy!

She said "he's a good little guy" I think meaning his attitude is good/strong. She gave me 4 medications (2 heart meds, an anti-inflammatory, an antibiotic) plus advice to hand feed him meat baby food. And I need to "soften" his cage with lots of fleece and no wheel to taunt him.

We've got an appointment for Aug 3. She says he may respond to the meds, we have to see if he can get feeling/function back in those legs if the clot clears. We'll have to look at his quality of life (read: think of putting him down) then.

I gave him his first doses successfully. I'm very glad to have a clear (albeit not very positive) prognosis and things to do to help. I am NOT trying to be a pessimist (I'm really not one), but I am looking at these two weeks as hedgie hospice and how I can make him comfortable and spend lots of time with him.

I run my own business and thankfully don't have any work scheduled. And enough money to not worry. *whew* So, it looks like a quiet couple of weeks with Mr. Numo at home.

Wish us well!

How's the Little Guy Doing?
You can see that this end is alert:

But this end isnt:

His legs shouldn't be dragging like that. He doesn't respond to me pinching them and they are cool to the touch. Despite that, he's bookin' around with his front legs. Just dragging the back.

Kinda obvious, but this is very worrisome. And being worried and sad makes me tired! But I let Numo push around in my quilt, which he loves. And keep that keen eye on him.

Date with the Vet
This morning I called the vet. I made an appointment for Monday morning. I didn't rush because (1) While his back half is abnormal, his front half is A-O-K. (2) His eating, drinking, pooping are normal (3) Having more time gives me time to observe him and bring more info to the vet.

I'm excited to have the appointment with Dr. Horton, the lead vet at Chicago Exotics. The vet for my well pet visit long ago was fine - but I am keen to have the expert for this visit.

My friends Jen and Josh have agreed to take me to the vet. I can get there by public transit. Since this is stressful, it'll be lovely to have friends with me.

Numo is Wobbling
Not a good sign. I took Little Old Man (as opposed to Gunther the Cat who is Big Young Man) out to run around and he tore off to get a toilet paper tube on his head. His butt was all wobbly.

Looking closer, he was sweeping his back paws under, not pushing off on them.

Very worrisome. I looked online for information and thought it could be early signs of Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome, or perhaps he was going into hibernation?

Ugh.

The first thing I did was treat it like hibernation. I moved his cage into my office, away from the air conditioner. Then I sat with him for a long time all wrapped in fleece to make sure he's warm.

I will update his blog, of course.

Coexisting
The most common question I get is, "How do Numo and Gunther get along?" This is a good image to show you. Gunther's a good kitty. 98% of the time that he's perch near Numo's play area, he sits intently watched. Very occasionally he paws at Numo or Numo's tube. Very gently. Numo huffs, and then Numo relaxes as if to say, "Oh, it's you."

NOTE: I wanted and got a hedgehog, I do not want hedgehog stuff. Really, I mean it. When you see hedgehog stuff, think of me and Numo, but please do not buy it for me/us.
