Breath

Back
in June 2003, I made this
pillow. I
knew it would make a good print. But it
percolated for years. Two things put it
at the front of my mind again:
1. I am determined to begin some
kind of meditation or breathing practice
this year (2009).
2.
Recently, a reader wrote me a very lovely,
gentle nudge to make art of people who
aren't white. Always been an intention,
never made it into action.
So
here we have an African American woman
wearing white. I really like the "negative
space" of her clothing, and using
flat shapes to create form, rather than
my usually thick black lines. I'm also
very fond of the loopy lines that represent
the breath going throughout the body.
Printing
was tough. Lining up all the screens is
called registration. For me, it's always
a pain and I hate the number of unusable,
misregistered prints. This edition is
so small (20 prints vs. 30 or 40) because
the image is made of shapes, not lines.
My usual nice thick black lines give me
wiggle room to "hide" my registration.
This one is flat shapes, right out there
in the open. It's a challenge, but I really
like the results.

edition of 20. Printed on white Stonehenge
paper. Printed in baby blue and brown
inks.

Butterfly
 |
Detail:
 |
| This
is my first print of 2009. I know a lot
of us wish we could have a "do over"
last year. It was a rough one. I've been
thinking about some pretty non-profound
positive images: tree for growth, hatching
bird for birth, butterfly for transformation.
Originally, I thought of the butterfly right
after Obama got elected. I pictured it as
a pretty on-the-nose red, white and blue
number.
That
felt too specific. The idea percolated.
Later, I started drawing a pretty straight
forward butterfly and it bored me. I dove
into Google images and saw a few butterfly
tattoos with human faces. Much more interesting.
Then the image pretty much few out of
my fingers. I didn't sneak an egg in there,
but I do have the three other stages of
a butterfly lifecycle in the image.
A
new element in this print - My typical
layout is the image basically centered
on the page. Wanted the butterfly flying,
breaking the frame.
Also,
a sad fact. This is the first print since
Riso stopped distributing Print Gocco
supplies to US. I now look at my stockpile
of screens, bulbs and inks and see a finite
amount of work I can do.
An
edition of 35. Printed on white Stonehenge

inks. Handcolored with red india ink.
Sequins and joss paper elements blued

Starcatcher
 |
Detail:
 |
|
In
spring of 2005, I drew this
girl holding a star. She charmed
me so much, that I scanned her in, and
carefully removed all the fill in color.
I decided she needed a star print dress
and that gold and black would a great
ink combination.
If
she's not charming enough in her own right,
I see her as being a lovely gift to celebrate
someone's success. Or your own.

edition of 30. Printed on white Stonehenge

The gold ink has a nice shimmer to it.

Mermaid
 |
Detail:
 |
|
Once
upon a time, a graphic facilitator named
Brandy sat in a hotel room on a buisness
trip and watched a TV show about Weeki
Wachee. Weeki Wachee was a
faraway land/amusement park that boasts
live mermaid shows. In the summer of 2008,
Brandy went to Weeki Wachee. She ate fudge,
got caught in a down pour and enjoyed
all three mermaid shows that day. She
was not dissapointed. The trip inspired
this print.
I

turquoise ink and black ink.

Gray
Cat
 |
Detail:
 |
|
I
took a photograph of my very handsome
cat, Gunther. The shape of his giant backside
and the question mark of tail inspired
me to make a print of him.
Heaven
knows the last thing this world needs
is more Cat Art. I know that.
The
first drawing kind of sucked. Too Patrick
Nagel, with lines that were too slick
and pointy. The very, very last thing
this world needs is Bad Cat Art.
I refined the drawing and eventually got
a drawing that I felt reflected the nice
comfy curves and the solidity of my fat
cat along with pattern of the fur down
his spine.
I
created a two color serigraph with silver
and black ink. The silver looks more like
rich graphite than a shiny metallic. Gunther's
eyes were handpainted in yellow-green
watercolor.

Talking
Alligator
 |
Detail:
 |
|
I
have to blame cell phone ring tones on
this. I'm fairly cell-phone-phobic, but
I had to replace my business phone. That
resulted in new ringtones and the discovery
of Schnappi! I downloaded the theme song
to this German kid's cartoon about a baby
alligator, because the tune is infectiously
fun.
That
reminded me of my Talking alligator cards.
I loved that drawing. I adapted the gator
to be talking. What would an alligator
say? Heck knows, but I figured the sounds
would have sharp points.
Since
he's smiling, I figure he's telling a
colorful anecdote. Or a joke. Or bragging.
A
multicolored serigraph in greens and gold,
with handstamped elements and a gold foil
seal.

Hungry
Ghost
 |
Detail:
 |
|
This
one-color serigraph started when I learned
about the concept of The Hungry Ghost
and felt compelled to draw one. The insatiable
ghost has a itty bitty mouth and a giant
stomach. To represent that, I drew its
GI tract. It had to end somewhere. Then
I thought, "What's ghost poop?"
Uh, puffs of air.
I
still giggle at this. The whole lesson
is not to live like a hungry ghost, but
we can also enjoy a little scatalogical
humor. No?

Principal
& Shaw
Principal:
 |
Detail:
 |
|
A
two print set. These collaged serigraphs
started when I found bundle of cigar bands
on eBay. I chose "El Principal"
and "Shaw's Good Advice," wanting
to turn them into belts. What kind of
men would wear them? What would they say?
Here's my answer.
Principal
is the long-winded gadfly with effusive,
complicated gilded speech. In contrast,
the cowboy Shaw is plainspoken.
