Special
Request Cafe Press Design - Q & A
My friend Kathleen, reference librarian at University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign, asked me to create an image for a group
that's working together on virtual reference.
The mission: to create a mug design that could include: book,
computer, question, answer, research process, card catalog,
communication, library building, words, tree of knowledge
- which Kathleen followed up with:
"Aside from books (physical information) most of what
most librarians do is intangible. We provide answers. We assist
in the research process. We provide electronic representations
of documents (catalog records and full-text).
This group was involved specifically with virutal (chat and
email) reference. We were public librarian and academic librarians.
We developed a set of best practices. Not too visually inspiring,
perhaps."
Not visually inspiring?!
Ha!
I totally geeked out, and this came together quickly (watermark

Friends Don't Let Friends Vote Bush
This design idea came on Tuesday night. Before my friend Rose
could even say where she stood, I blurted, "If you vote for
Bush, you can't be my friend." She told me not to worry. And
thus the
design is born.
--AND--
In the same production session, I designed this straightforward
design of a might phrase:

It
is never too late.
I've been in a longer-than-usual winter funk this year. I just
couldn't shake it until a couple days ago. I felt like I just
started shedding my winter skin. Last night the sentence "It
is never too late" flashed in my head. I know it's a simple
statement, and that's it's beauty. So I paired the words with
eight different bold colors and put it on a slew of stuff. Personally,
the totes and the mugs are my favorites.
--AND--
I've gotta say, I la-la-love the CafePress tote bags!
Great size, great construction. I bought the Pepper
Burst Tote and I use it constantly. The straps are
long enough to carry over your shoulder without being stuck
in your armpit. It's big enough to hold a bunch of stuff. I
often use it for neighborhood errands or as my travel carryon
stuffed with magazines, water bottle, cd player and discs, camera
and snacks. I endorsed them with confidence.
