the idea

My 30th birthday was last January. I had a potluck. It was fantastic. Good friends, good food. Everyone was asking for everyone else's recipes. I thought, "I oughta create a Friends of Loosetooth.com cookbook." I love old ladies auxiliary type cookbooks that are a group, community effort. In the next thought, "and we'll donate the money to a food bank."

Done and done.

Well, spring wiggled away from me, and I don't think people think of cooking during the summer, so the template was designed and the invitation went out the Fall of 2004.

The objective is to create a cookbook compiling recipes from my circles of friends, offline and on. The book was produced through CafePress, meaning that each copy is printed and sent by CafePress when you order a copy (or copies - they make great gifts) through my CafePress store.

the cause

Simple idea - the cookbook is a community effort, so the profit should go to the community. Simpler idea - help hungry people get food.

So, the profits will be going to America's Second Harvest.

the goal

I'm not sure. I've never done this. I guess I'd like the cookbook to have 200 recipes and to sell 200 copies.

Update: I think I've ended up with about 170 recipes, 250 page cookbook. More numbers soon when I get the physical book. It's a SUPER collection of recipes!

Update 01.07.05: The grand total of recipes is 192! That's within reach of the goal of 200 recipes, I'm plenty pleased with that! Now, the next goal is to sell 200 copies of the cookbook which would raise $800 for America's Second Harvest.

Update 01.24.05: 38 copies of the cookbook have been sold!

Update 03.25.05: 58 copies of the cookbook have been sold!
The first donation of $200 was sent to American today!
Congrats to all who helped, and please keep spreading the good word.

04.01.05: 75 copies sold! No foolin'!

Amihan Huesmann
"i tried the salmon stew out on a few girl friends. it was very popular. i substituted sour cream for about half of the cream (it was in my fridge) and that was good. the next day, i found some fresh dill in the free box at the co-op where i volunteer, and that REALLY improved things. i would recommend not being a cheap-ass and going for the fresh dill.i also omitted the rye bread in the soup, but served it (toasted) on the side. i will definitely be making it again. a yummy splurge! and great leftovers."

Alexandra's Feta Pasta

Don Thompson
"I made Alexandra's Feta Pasta tonight. I followed the recipe as written. It is an easy dish to make and it tastes excellent! Very good recipe. This is a very good meal, especially when accompanied with a good vintage glass of cold 2% milk. Perhaps a good Athenos greek salad would go well with it also. In the best interest of good journalistic food reporting, I have decided to make the above mentioned salad tomorrow to go with my second serving of Alexandra's Feta Pasta...just to make sure that it would work!"

From Sandy -
I wanted to tell you how much I enjoy the cookbook. It is really neat. I've used a couple recipes out of it, but I could break the kid's* neck for putting me in it as "Butter Queen."

But anyway, it's a really neat cookbook. Good job.

Thank you for putting one together.

- Sandy
